anonymous confession – I Wanted What She Had… and I Lost Everything

An anonymous confession
I don’t know what I’m expecting from sharing this. Forgiveness? Relief? Maybe just a little breathing space from the guilt I’ve been dragging around for years. Either way, I need to let it out. No filters, no lies—just the truth, the way it happened.
Her name is Nenye. My best friend. My person. We met during our university days and clicked instantly. People used to say we behaved like twins, finishing each other’s sentences, showing up in similar clothes without planning it. I loved her like a sister… but I also envied her.
Nenye had this glow. She didn’t even try to be the centre of attention—it just happened. She was smart, confident, and had a man named Michael, who cherished her deeply. Michael was tall, neat, soft-spoken, and every bit the kind of man most girls pray for. The way he looked at her? Like he had found something sacred. It used to sting. Deep down, I wanted that kind of love. I wanted him.
It started harmless. Or so I thought.
The first time I stopped by Michael’s shop alone, after I followed Nenye there a few times, it was not a coincidence. But instead of leaving after exchanging pleasantries, as I claimed to be passing by, I stayed. We talked. I made a joke about how Nenye was always bossing people around, and he laughed harder than I expected. That laugh stayed with me.
A few weeks later, I started visiting again. Sometimes I’d tell Nenye I was going somewhere else, but I’d go to Michael’s shop. I’d help him arrange his shelves, gist with him, and somehow, I always slipped in little things to paint Nenye differently—“She can be too controlling, sha.” “She doesn’t really open up, does she?” Little drops.
Looking back, I was working overtime to shift his mind.
And it worked. Slowly, he started calling me, checking up on me. And that was how it started. One thing led to the other, and I eventually found myself in his bed.
Our first time wasn’t even romantic—it happened in his car, one of the days i stayed longer than i should till he closed his shop for the day, and he dropped me off at my hostel, but that was after we drove to an old school field so we could have a romp. it was rushed, messy, and full of guilt. But it unlocked something dark. After that day, we couldn’t stop. I became the other woman in my best friend’s relationship.
The sex was wild. Raw. Addictive. He would send her off with sweet words, then call me over. I used to wonder how he balanced the lies. But he did. And I kept falling deeper.
Nenye had no idea. She was still telling me all their wedding plans—colours, venue options, catering costs. She trusted me enough to ask me to help organise her bridal shower. The guilt would hit me at night like a slap, but it wasn’t enough to keep me from going back into Michael’s arms. Sometimes, even the same day I helped her pick a wedding dress, I would be in his house… on his bed.
I thought he would leave her for me at some point, and I looked forward to it foolishly. He told me once that he didn’t think she understood him. I clung to those words like a lifeline. I convinced myself that love would win, that he would realise I was the one.
Then something shifted. About a month to the wedding, he started going cold. Calls stopped. Messages slowed. When I confronted him, he said, “Let’s be mature about this. You knew what this was.”
I broke.
He blocked me. Everything—WhatsApp, Instagram, even Facebook. Like I was just another phase. Days later, their pre-wedding photos dropped online. He looked like a groom in love. She looked like a queen.
I still attended the wedding. Don’t ask me why. I just… couldn’t not go. I wore a smile, helped serve drinks, even danced with her. Nobody knew the woman beside the bride had been in bed with the groom just weeks earlier.
It’s been four years.
They have two children now. Beautiful kids. Nenye posts their family photos all the time. Sometimes she still texts me random things, laughing, thanking me for being such a good friend.
And me?
I’m still single. Emotionally numb. i kept this to myself all these years, hoping i could share it with someone and find some relief, you know, talking it out maybe even getting called out. I haven’t been in a serious relationship since. I’m not even sure I know how to love right anymore. Maybe I cursed myself. Maybe I broke something sacred when I went after what wasn’t mine.
But I’m tired of pretending. Tired of walking around with this mask. I betrayed a friend who loved me. And I lost everything—her, my dignity, and whatever peace I thought I had. (Anonymous Confession).
