It’s not a myth that meal planning goes a long way for health.

It might sound boring, but trust me, it saves me so much time and stress. Having a meal ready to go in the fridge means I’m less likely to reach for junk when I’m hungry or tired šŸ„˜šŸ“.

Eating healthy is not about following a strict diet —it’s about nourishing your body with the right balance of nutrients and keeping your energy levels high by simply being mindful of what’s on your plate and what you shove down your throat. We tend to be less mindful of what we eat, but becoming intentional about our food choices could boost our well-being 🌱. Here are a few simple but powerful habits to incorporate into your lifestyle for better health šŸ„—šŸŽ

1. Eat a Variety of Foods šŸ½ļø

How colourful your food is, shows how nutritious it is. Incorporate fruits šŸ“, vegetables 🄦, whole grains, healthy fats šŸ„‘ and lean proteins šŸ— into your meals. The more variety, the more nutrients your body receives.

2. Choose Whole Grains 🌾

Whole grains like brown rice, quinoa, and oats are rich in fibre. In Nigeria, the fibre-rich grains we are familiar with include sorghum, wheat, fonio, maize and millet, which help digestion and keep you fuller for longer.

3. Watch Your Portion Sizes šŸ„„

Healthy eating is not just about what you eat, it’s also about how much you eat. Overeating, even healthy foods, can lead to weight gain. Keep your portion sizes in check and eat until you’re satisfied, not stuffed šŸ½.

4. Stay hydrated šŸ’§

Water is not only a component of a healthy diet; it is also essential for your body to function optimally. Aim for at least 8 glasses a day to stay hydrated. It will also support digestion, energy levels, and skin health.

5. Limit Processed Foods šŸ”

Try to limit your intake of sugary drinks, packaged snacks, and fast foods. They can be high in unhealthy fats, sugar, and sodium. I’m guilty on this one but I don’t snack them often.

6. Mindful Eating 🧘

Slow down, savour each bite and chew properly. This helps you enjoy your meals more and aids digestion.

7. Snack smarter šŸŒšŸ„œ

I eat processed snacks but I don’t make it a habit. You should replace processed snacks with nuts, yoghurt, or a piece of fruit. They will keep you satisfied without the crash.

Making small changes today can lead to long-term health benefits. Remember, it’s not about perfection—it’s about consistency! 🌟 Keep in mind that healthy recipes can actually be fun and delicious! It is about getting creative and trying new things. Healthy doesn’t mean bland— I’m always amazed at how satisfying healthy meals can be, start eating right and feel the difference šŸ‘©ā€šŸ³āœØ.
